Course objectives

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize complex distal radius fractures and identify their treatment.
  • Understand the classification of complex metacarpal fractures and how these should be fixed.
  • Recognize malunions in distal radius and metacarpal fractures and their treatment.
  • Conduct a PIP arthroplasty for both primary reconstruction and post trauma.
  • Understand the surgical technique of ulna shortening and ulna head replacement.
     

Course fee 1190 € | Early bird special until October 30, 2026: 990 € 
(The course fee comprises all course costs, coffee breaks, lunches and bus transfers on all course days. The dinner on both course days is also included. A production tour of BIRG's industrial partner KLS Martin on the morning of the first course day is optional, voluntary and also included in the course fee.)

  • Surgical considerations for distal radius fractures: When and how to operate – Which DRFs should be operated?
  • Preoperative planning of DRFs – key fragments and classification
  • Volar and dorsal approach to distal radius, pearls and pitfalls
  • Patterns of radio carpal fracture dislocations
  • Volar and dorsal rim fractures
  • Concomitant TFCC and SL lesions, should they be treated?
  • Distal ulna fractures – treat it or leave it?

Session on metacarpal and phalangeal fracture management

  • Treatment strategy – conservative treatment of metarcarpal fractures
  • Treatment strategy in metacarpal head and shaft fractures
  • Metacarpal base fractures and dislocations
  • Fractures on the base of the first metacarpal
  • Treatment strategy in phalangeal fractures – conservative vs. operative
  • Corrective osteotomies in phalanges and metacarpals – free hand vs. 3D planning 
  • Discussion

Part 2 | 10:45 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
