Course objectives

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize complex distal radius fractures and identify their treatment.
  • Understand the classification of complex metacarpal fractures and how these should be fixed.
  • Recognize malunions in distal radius and metacarpal fractures and their treatment.
  • Conduct a PIP arthroplasty for both primary reconstruction and post trauma.
  • Understand the surgical technique of ulna shortening and ulna head replacement.

Course purpose

This two-day course aims to give a comprehensive overview of the treatment of complex fractures and pathologies requiring arthroplasty in hand surgery. Participants will be presented with theoretical presentations and case studies, which will be discussed in group settings, and the topics learned will be practiced on fresh frozen cadavers. A tutor will be available for every four participants.

Day 1

Thursday, September 4, 2025 (starting at 8:00 a.m. BST)

  • Treatment of complex distal radius fractures 
  • Cadaver workshop − distal radius fractures 
  • Malunions following complex distal radius fractures 
  • Treatment of complex metacarpal fractures 
  • Cadaver workshop – metacarpal fractures
  • Malunions following complex metacarpal fractures

Day 2

Friday, September 5, 2025 (starting at 8:30 a.m. BST)

  • Ulna shortening theory
  • Cadaver workshop – ulna shortening 
  • Ulna head replacement theory 
  • Cadaver workshop − ulna head replacement 
  • PIP arthroplasty (primary and post-trauma) 
  • Cadaver workshop – PIP arthroplasty
