Course purpose

Malunion of the distal radius and forearm in posttraumatic or congenital disorders are rare diagnosis but can lead to considerable complaints and problems. In the event of a symptomatic malunion, especially in young patients, correction must always be considered to achieve the most anatomical result.

3D planning and mirroring of the opposite side is a well known procedures established in the last decade. To give justice to the individual anatomy also printed individual titanium-implants, first introduced in maxilla-fascial surgery, are now available for radius and forearm reconstruction. We present the technical planning and implementation of this new procedure as well as the experience with such patient specific guides and 3D printed plates will be discussed and illustrated by specific cases.

Undisturbed forearm rotation is important for the overall function of the upper extremity. Arthrosis of the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) will lead to painful limitation of forearm rotation and grip strength. Many disorders or injuries may lead to the arthrotic degeneration of the DRUJ with the distal radius fracture representing the most common cause. The biomechanical concept of DRUJ resection arthroplasties as well as the operative technique, indications, contraindications and long term results and treatment options of the established reconstruction of the DRUJ using the Ulnar Head Prosthesis (UHP) will be discussed in these presentations.
